POSITION PURPOSE
System Administrator/Developer is primarily responsible for the
operation and maintenance of the administrative servers. The position
also designs, develops, maintains and supports administrative applications
on
campus. As a member of
Whitman College Technology Services (WCTS), this position collaborates
with other IT members of to provide an information technology environment
that is
consistent with the goals of Whitman College and meets the needs of faculty, staff, and students.

- Perform system
administration of servers for administrative applications. This
includes
installing and maintaining system and application software and keeping
patches up-to-date.

- Support and maintain Web and networked application software (e.g.
DocLocator, CrystalReports, Blackboard Connect).

- Provide technical support and service calls to administrative
offices of the
college.

solutions for stated needs.
- Planning, coordinating, designing and implementing
administrative applications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Individuals must posses these knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able
to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential
functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some
other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary
physical requirements with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to
safely perform the essential functions of the job.
- An ability to operate
personal computers and demonstrate proficiency with Internet resources
and networked environments.
- An ability to learn
new technologies and assimilate new information quickly.
- Demonstrated knowledge
of Liux and Windows system administration and programming using Perl or
equivalent scripting language.
- Strong service orientation.
- Strong interpersonal
and communication skills and ability to establish and maintain
cooperative and harmonious working relationships with a variety of
campus constituencies.
- Willingness to work on
evenings and weekends.
- Vision for and dedication
to the role of a computer network within a small college.
- A proven ability to
make technical issues understandable and an ability to match technical
opportunities to college goals.
- Preferred skills
include experience in information technology in higher education
environment, experience in user services, experience
with SAN, Virtual Servers, DNS and DHCP, and relevant experience beyond
the minimum requirement.
