POSITION PURPOSE

Academic technology consultant for Division III serves as the primary support for academic departments in the Sciences, and the Assistant Director of Support Services is responsible for poroviding support and assistance to all technology users on campus. As a member of Whitman College Technology Services (WCTS), this position collaborates with other IT members to provide an information technology environment that is consistent with the goals of Whitman College and meets the needs of faculty, staff, and students.

  1. As the Academic Technology Consultant for Division III:
    • provide desktop and application support for academic departments in the Sciences. This includes consultation, troubleshooting, training, documentation, research, and exploration for specialized applications, such as cluster computing and GIS.
    • collaborate with other IT staff, library, and Center for Teaching and Learning to design, develop, implement and maintain various instructional uses of technology.
    • oversee maintenance of WCTS Computer Lab in the Science Building

  1. As the Assistant Director of Support Services:
    1. supervise support services consultants.
    2. manage day-to-day operation of the Help Desk.
    3. coordinate the management of service requests.

  1. As a member of the Academic Technology Consulting Group, participate in
    1. the planning, coordinating, designing, scheduling and conducting technology-related seminars and workshops for students, faculty and staff.
    2. the preparation and dissemination of information (e.g. documentation, handouts, newsletter) regarding WCTS services.

  1. Maintain professional contacts with other colleges, associations, organizations and vendors concerning instructional technology.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Individuals must posses these knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the essential functions of the job.

  1. Requisite skills to maintain and support an information system. Experience in educational environment preferred.
  2. Familiarity with needs and methodologies in the Sciences preferred.
  3. Requisite skills required for working with a relational database.
  4. Extensive knowledge of Macintosh computers and Mac OSX environment.
  5. Proficiency with Windows XP, Linux and Unix.
  6. Vision for and dedication to the role of academic technologies within a small college.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to participatory management and a strong service orientation.
  8. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative and harmonious working relationships with in a diverse and multicultural environment.
  9. A proven ability to make technical issues understandable and an ability to match technical opportunities to college goals.
  10. A proven ability to translate challenges into opportunities and work comfortably in a changing, sometimes ambituous, environment.
  11. Willingness to work on evenings and weekends.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  1. A bachelor's degree in information technology, educational technology, science, or other relevant field. Advanced degree preferred.
  2. A minimum two years experience in microcomputer user support in a networked computing environment
  3. Satisfactory clearance of background check required.
