POSITION PURPOSE

The Hardware Technician provides assistance for the installation, maintenance and repair of all college owned technology equipment. As a member of Whitman College Technology Services (WCTS), this position collaborates with other members of WCTS to provide an information technology environment that is consistent with the goals of Whitman College and meets the needs of faculty, staff, and students.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  1. Maintain and repair technology-related equipment on campus. Technology involved include, but are not limited to: server hardware, networked printers, computer desktops/laptops and Macintosh computers.
  2. Setup equipment. The work may include installation of operating system, security software, device drivers, network software, installing cabling and connectors, configuring settings, and security devices.
  3. Maintain records of repair, placement and maintenance of equipment.
  4. Participate in the assisting and training of faculty and staff in the use of technology.
  5. Perform service calls for technology-related problems on campus.
  6. Perform other essential duties and implementation of projects as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they posses the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements with or without the aid of mechanical devises, to safely perform the essential functions of the job.

  1. An ability to operate personal computers, and demonstrate proficiency with Internet resources, and networked environments.
  2. An ability to learn new technologies and assimilate new information quickly.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in:
    1. Trouble-shooting techniques and ability to read and interpret service manuals.
    2. Detailed knowledge of computer operating systems..
    3. The use of a variety of power and hand tools, cleaners and test equipment related to the maintenance and repair of computer and network equipment.
  4. Strong service orientation.
  5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative and harmonious working relationship with a variety of campus constituencies.
  6. An ability to match technical opportunities to college goals.
  7. An ability to perform manual labor, including heavy lifting (50 lbs) regularly.
  8. Preferred skills include ability to maintain records and inventories in a technical office and experience beyond the minimum requirement.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  1. High school graduate or equivalent. Two year college and/or technical school degree with emphasis in electronics repair is preferred.
  2. Minimum one years skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of technology-related equipment is preferred.
  3. Satisfactory clearance of background check required.
