POSITION PURPOSE

System Administrator has primary responsibility for backup and maintenance of the campus-wide servers. As a member of Whitman College Technology Services (WCTS), this position collaborates with other members of WCTS to provide an information technology environment that is consistent with the goals of Whitman College and meets the needs of faculty, staff, and students.

  1. Perform and monitor daily server backup and weekly off-site tape rotation.

  1. Perform system administration of campus-wide Linux and Windows servers. This includes installing and maintaining system and application software and keeping patches up-to-date.

  1. Serve as the primary support for the Storage Area Network (SAN) and virtual server infrastructure.

  1. Management of email systems, including virus scanning, spam filtering and list creation and management.

  1. Assist Director, Technology Infrastructure in
    1. Monitoring and supporting critical network services (e.g. DNS, DHCP and Email).
    2. Maintaining and monitoring the connectivity to off-campus networks, including the Internet
    3. Maintaining accounts for faculty, students and staff.
    4. Maintaining and coordinating the security of the campus computer network.
    5. Writing applications using various scripts, macros, and programming languages.
    6. Researching and recommending equipment and software solutions for stated needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Individuals must posses these knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the essential functions of the job.

  1. An ability to operate personal computers and demonstrate proficiency with Internet resources and networked environments.
  2. An ability to learn new technologies and assimilate new information quickly.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of Liux and Windows system administration and programming using Perl or equivalent scripting language.
  4. Strong service orientation.
  5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative and harmonious working relationships with a variety of campus constituencies.
  6. Willingness to work on evenings and weekends.
  7. Vision for and dedication to the role of a computer network within a small college.
  8. A proven ability to make technical issues understandable and an ability to match technical opportunities to college goals.
  9. Preferred skills include experience in information technology in higher education environment, experience in user services, experience with SAN, Virtual Servers, DNS and DHCP, and relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement.
