#1 Use Secure FTP (SFTP) to transfer files to the server. There are
several free SFTP programs available for both Windows and Macintosh
computers. Most Faculty and Staff computers should already have an SFTP
program installed. If required, you can download and install a SFTP
program online at: http://wcts.whitman.edu/resources/downloads.html
#2 Newer versions of the Dreamweaver software supports Secure FTP. If you
have an older version of Dreamweaver, you can purchase an upgrade to the

Email sent using email clients other than Pine (Outlook, Thunderbird,
OS-X Mail or WebMail) were not delayed and were delivered normally.

the backup "peering" link we have with our ISP (PocketInet).
Once the fiber optic link was reset, the ResNetPlus service was restored and all Residence Hall
Internet connectivity returned to normal.

A worm, virus, or some other form of malware is stealing available public
IP addresses. This means computers on campus are often not able to connect
to the Internet. WCTS is aware of the problem and is working to resolve it.
Updates will be posted as more information becomes available.
WCTS has restricted the IPs which can request a public IP address to just
the valid Whitman local IPs (which is a small subset of our available local
addresses). This will slow down the ability of the virus to steal public
IPs, but not completely prevent it. WCTS is working to identify the
infected host(s) and remove the virus from campus.
Off-campus email connection through Charter Cable

2nd Week of April - May 4th, 2005
We have received a number of reports that Whitman users with home
connections through Charter are having problems connecting to their
Whitman email, resulting in extremely slow connections, or connection
failures or time-outs. We have received no reports of problems from any
other internet service providers. WCTS cannot find any reason for this
within the Whitman network. All indications are that the problem is with
Charter. WCTS was finally successful in reaching a local support person on
April 20th who said he would investigate the problem. No subsequent
updates have been received from Charter. WCTS does have a possible

One or more students installed a rogue Apple wireless Access Point in
in Douglas. The AP acted as a DHCP server and was handing out IP addresses
in the 192.168/16 netblock. This caused several student machines in both
Douglas and Prentiss to pick up invalid IP addresses. As a result, they
were unable to access campus and Internet resources. Any students having
problems connecting to the Internet or to campus should reboot their
computers.
The rogue AP's port has been turned off. WCTS is attempting to contact
the student(s) involved and is monitoring the situation in case the AP is
moved to a different port or additional restricted devices are connected
to the network.

IMMEDIATELY. If you suspect your computer to be infected,
disconnect your computer from the network and contact WCTS
immediately.

UPDATE - It appears that this is actually a feature (port-blocking) that affects only a handful of applications rather than all outgoing email as previously thought.

Limited Faculty and Staff computers that have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i are having trouble sending outgoing mail.
This only affect computers delivered in the last few months that have the newest version of VirusScan installed.
The problem appears to be caused by a recent update to the software that is blocking outbound connections to mail servers.
We are currently trying to ascertain the details and come up with a permanent fix.
In the interim, when you need to send email, right-click the VirusScan "shield" icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
Left-click "Disable On-Access Scan" in the menu that appears.
IMPORTANT - when you are finished sending email, right-click
the icon again and left-click "Enable On-Access Scan" to reenable VirusScan and keep your computer protected.

network until the problems can be located and fixed.
