"Student Computer Consultants?" So, does this mean they'll help me with my personal computer?

Olin, Maxey, the Library and the Science lab are staffed with student computer consultants during posted hours. The library is staffed from roughly 8am until 1am. These consultants are there to help with questions.

Assistance with personally owned computers is limited, dur to liability issues, however. If students are willing to sign a liability waiver, some of the consultants may decide to do what they can. This is on a case-by-case basis and is up to the discretion of each consultant.

What's this "Help Desk", what can they help me with?

The WCTS Help Desk (located in Olin 168) is a resource for Whitman students, faculty and staff. When you call the Help Desk, the consultant there will either answer your question or forward your question to an expert on the subject.

For hardware problems: WCTS is responsible for the maintenance of Whitman-owned equipment ONLY. If you are in dire need of assistance with your personal computer, please follow this link to someone outside of WCTS who can help you.

What if I need certain software (like virus-scanning software)? Can I get it at Whitman?

In generaly, Whitman does not supply software for students. There is an exception to this--Whitman does supply students with McAfee Virus Scan. If this virus-scanning software is requested, WCTS will temporarily loan students a free copy to download on their computer. This is possible because Whitman has bought a campus-wide license for McAfee for the explicit purpose.
