What WCTS Can and Cannot Do

WCTS gets lots of questions about what kinds of support and assistance are available for students from WCTS staff, Student Consultants, and ResNet Assistants. Here is a brief summary:

  • Student Consultants: Student Consultants on duty in the labs are available to tackle any reports of problems with lab computers, printers, or lab software, and will forward problems to WCTS staff if they cannot solve them on the spot. They can also answer questions and provide guidance in the use of lab equipment and software.
  • ResNet Assistants: One Student Consultant in each residence hall acts as ResNet Assistant. Your RD has contact information for your hall's ResNet Assistant, or you can check the WCTS web site for more information. He or she is "on-call" to ensure all residence hall network outlets are working, and to report possible wiring and outlet problems to WCTS for service. They can also answer questions and provide guidance after hours in the use of standard software packages, and they can give you information for setting up or solving problems with your network connection.
  • College Owned Equipment: WCTS provides complete hardware support for all computer equipment owned by the College. If you are experiencing problems, contact either a Student Consultant or WCTS Help Desk.
  • College Owned Software: WCTS provides support for all the standard software packages installed on lab workstations, and in staff and faculty offices. If you are experiencing problems, contact either a Student Consultant or WCTS Help Desk.
  • Personal Hardware and Software: WCTS does not support personally owned hardware or software, beyond making suggestions or providing documentation. In many cases, if we were to open the case of your computer or work on any hardware problem, your manufacturer's warranty may be voided.

If you do need help with your personal computer or other personal equipment, there are quite a few options in Walla Walla, check the yellow pages. Also, a number of students and professional technicians offer independent consulting and repair services. Contact information is posted on the bulletin board outside WCTS (168 Olin Hall).
