Fall 1997 Proposal
name: Mary Anne O'Neil and Patrick Henry
institution: Whitman College
language: French
project: Student Assistant Fellowships
title: work on templates on the French provinces and on the holocaust
duration: first and second semester
description:
Given the heavy teaching duties of Whitman College, it is almost impossible for
the language professors to develop templates without the help of student assistants.
Students are useful in a variety of functions. Those who have been trained in
the use of the Herren templates can actually assemble materials. Students can
be a vital help in the location of sources, assemblage of bibliographies, as well
as in scanning multimedia materials. It is especially important that students
be used for the evaluation ofnew templates, and, indeed, their evlauations can
help teachers revise templates according to the needs of students at different
levels. Finally, since the Mellon project is one that is likely to continue for
several years, it is important that , each year, we train new students in the
construction of templates. To all of these ends, we request funds for both the
first and second semesters of the 1997-98 academic years.
outcome:
1) To revise and expand a currently existing template on the Holocaust in France.
2) To do the initial web-based research and assemblage of materials for lessons
on the French provinces of Corsida and The Basque country.
timeline:
Fall 1997: Patrick Henry works with a student to scan and incorporate new multi-media
materials into his existing template. This will require 5 hours of student help
for each of 14 weeks @ $6.00 per hour.
Fall 1997: Mary Anne O'Neil requests a student to do web and library searches
for information on Corsica and the French Basque Country. Student also will compile
a bibliography, scan all multimedia materials, write letters to agencies in France
and the United States requesting copyright clearances. This student will work
10 hours a week for 14 weeks @ $6.00 per hour.
Fall 1997: Several students from the intermediate and advanced levels of French
classes will evaluate the Holocaust template and the template on Alsace. Evaluations
will be used to revise these templates. This evaluation project will require 3
hours of student help for each of 14 weeks @ $6.00 per hour.
Spring 1997: In the spring, we will need student help to continue working on the
French provinces templates. Perhaps more importantly, we will need a student to
undergo training by the student technician who attended the Middlebury workshop
last summer, so that we have a student ready to work on new templates during the
1998-99 school year. For continuing work on templates and training, we will require
13 hours of student help for each of 14 weeks @ $6.00 per hour. All work on the
projects will take place in the Language Learning Center and faculty workstation
of Whitman College. All student work will be evaluated weekly by the professors
involved.
amount:
$1500 for first semester (Please note that we have already received these funds
and are presently paying student wages from them.
$1100 for second semester.
breakdown: Please see above explanations.
