Fall 1998 Proposal

name: Clark Colahan

institution: Whitman College

language: Spanish

status: Full-time, tenure track

type: StudentAssistant

title: Editing Don Quixote Videos

duration: four months

description: Writing and filming of the Don Quixote episodes was completed this summer on schedule as outlined in a successful NWLC proposal last year. Now we have digital images and sound that will eventually produce approximately 110 minutes of final product for use in the classroom. Time during the summer was not sufficient to complete all of the editing, however. One problem was that the college was unable to obtain computerized editing equipment in July from the manufacturer (AVID Cinema by Apple). We have now located two young men in the Walla Walla area who have the somewhat unusual expertise needed to complete the editing of the project using the new AVID digitized program.

outcome: The purpose is to pay two students to assist Colahan with editing the remaining unfinished episodes in order to complete the project that has already been largely carried out. Then the video episodes will be made available to consortium member schools for teaching purposes.

timeline: In October, Nov. Dec. and January of 1998-99 the two editors, working with project director, Clark Colahan, will produce the final versions of the episodes. We will take advantage of the offer of help from Hollywood filmmaker Jeffrey Townsend, with whom Colahan studied filmmaking last June, during these months. In the spring semester the videos will be used in Colahan's Cervantes' course, which he teaches every year.

amount: $500

breakdown: Wages for two student film editors over four months, for a total of $500.
