The guided reading segment of the project will incorporate the slides which have been digitized into pedagogical units on Ecuador and Guatemala which are included in the text book Tradicion y Cambio for the Civilization course and the novel El viejo que leia novelas de amor for the Composition course. The Civilization course will also use the Garcia Marquez book Miguel Littin, clandestino en Chile and Ms. Koestner will help in the digitizing of materials to be used in the guided reading materials on this book. Prof. Uggen will be working directly with Ms. Koestner to further improve his skills in web page development and the development of on line materials for his courses. This project is seen as preliminary to an expected summer stipend for Prof. Uggen to develop guided reading materials for his Hispanic Thought for which he intends to request Mellon funds to take digital images in Peru and Chile during the summer of 2000.

OUTCOME: The purpose of this proposal is to produce digital images of a large number of slides and digital photographs taken in Ecuador and Guatemala for inclusion in the development of guided reading materials for the three upper division courses taught by Professor Uggen. The desired outcome is to incorporate the results of this project into courses which are to be made available to studens on line. An additional desired outcome is to increase the technological proficiency of Prof. Uggen and to add an on line component to the courses he teaches at the upper division level.

The work will also include developing guided reading materials on the digitized slides for use in Prof. Uggen's Spanis Composition and Discussion, Hispanic Civilization, and Hispanic Thought courses.
