INTRODUCTION: This request
is for Course Release, Spring 2000 in order to continue work on my bookmark
file project for the Spanish section, to add to materials already created for
my third-year sequence, to continue coordination of our departmentÕs involvement
with the grant, especially supervision of adjuncts hired to replace our grant
participants and planning for our in-house training workshop in the spring.
My Chile overseas study program web page is complete, but needs maintenance
as students contribute photos and recommendations for future programs. My personal
web page, , has been recently updated but requires
maintanence to keep it current. Description of Spring projects: 1) Spanish program:
Common-access Website bookmark file development and maintenance Members of the
Spanish section have increasingly used Web sites as supplements to instruction
at all levels. Many of us have personal bookmark lists which number in the hundreds.
My original plan was to coordinate the URLs into a file only accessible to department
colleagues which would permit colleagues to upload their own contributions.
but I have found that merely designing a special web page linked to mine (and
ultimately to our department page) serves the much the same purpose. The site
is well underway, organized by topics and potential use. I need to add many
more URLs, however, and finish annotating the links as to level and appropriate
assignments. For this I have several files of bookmarks already selected but
which need to be uploaded. Contributions of site suggestions have been slow
in coming from other members of the Spanish section, so I also need to recruit
help from my colleagues. The page currently can be found at
and is presently a generic page designed for both students and colleagues. Ultimately
I will have two pages, one for instructors and one for student reference. 2)
Third-year Course Materials: Organization, Development, Copyright Permissions
I continue to create Web-based multi-media materials for my Spanish 301 and
321 courses. This fall I have rearranged my materials into generic categories
(glossed readings with comprehension exercises, Web-based activities, Latin
American and Spanish music selections with exercises; interactive grammar review
pages, etc: , log-in: span301, pass:
caramba). The old organization followed the Õ98 text which was replaced by another,
so now the exercises are less text-specific. I have added more grammar review
material and a few more songs and web-based exercises. I want to finally find
time to use Web CTÕs quiz and threaded discussion features as an addition to
what I have created on my own. I also need more time to finally add the video
segment I have digitized for the Fiestas de Sevilla program. In anticipation
of Span 321, I need to explore ideas for application of technology not only
for the grammar part of the course, but for the discussion of literature that
also takes place there. I presented the material I have created at the recent
World Net Association for Advancement of Computing in Education meeting with
positive results. Since the copyrighted materials I use have been password-protected,
I have not finished requesting copyright permission for materials used and for
materials yet to be incorporated. I realize that this is a serious omission
and I am requesting more time to complete this important step. I hope to again
work closely with our Mellon project student assistants, Noah Kersey and Will
Dyer, or their replacements should either decide not to continue during Spring
2000. I will continue to meet with him weekly and will continue to collaborate
with him in designing and creating exercises and activities. 3) Departmental
Coordination of Technology Application This spring, Lewis and Clark needs to
plan and carry out a workshop to cover training and curriculum planning issues
regarding use of technology in the classroom, as budgetted in our original grant
proposal. I consider this a major project which will require time and coordination
on my part as the coordinator for our campus. We also need to plan for more
student involvement in our various projects. In addition, I propose to continue
my efforts with the entire department to facilitate access to training and other
resources. I continue to supervise the adjunct instructors who fill our vacancies
created by course release. I will continue to coordinate any visits from Mellon
representatives, and I will continue to serve as the liaison to our chair and
the administrator in charge of our project, the dean of our division. I will
continue to work closely with our technical support, Beth Ohmer, on Mellon and
Consortium-related planning, and to work with our student assistant. I also
propose to continue involvement in the development of our Mellon work station
and to serve as the Lewis and Clark representative to the Consortium steering
committee. Since I receive no additional course release for these efforts above
and beyond my project-related release, they frequently are the reason I am unable
to dedicate as much time as I would like to my projects and am therefore behind
in what I projected in previous requests. 4) Chile Program Orientation: Web
Page Development and Maintenance I have developed a Web page for our Chile overseas
study program to facilitate and augment the orientation program which Cecilia
Benenati and I coordinate. It includes links to informational sites and to the
CIEE homepage, as well as background reading lists. I have (with our assistant's
help) scanned and uploaded photos from my visit to Santiago in June and those
that returning students have contributed, and propose to continue providing
a place to publish photos, comments and recommendations for outbound students.
I have similar material to create a Spain program web site, and if I am able
to find the time, will also work on that this semester. I will lead the Spain
program in Spring 2001. 5) Personal Web Page My personal web page has links
to all the above material, assignments and schedules for classes and campus/community
events, as well as links to sites relevant to Spanish language and culture.
It is a resource for my students, and needs constant attention and updating.
I propose to continue to use it as the organizer for my various projects and
expand its range. Brief Time Line: All projects will be worked on concurrently
throughout Spring semester 2000. Amount requested: One course release Breakdown
