TITLE: GUIDED READING OF SELECTED PASSAGES FROM "CRONICA DE UNA MUERTE ANUNCIADA" BY GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ
DURATION: SUMMER OF 2000
DESCRIPTION: I will design a web page including some passages from the novel "Cronica de una muerte anunciada" and other materials: -Short biography of Gabriel Garcia Marquez -Photographs of the author, his birth place, etc -Glossary of words -Census of characters, with a description of each of them, taken from the novel itself -Video clips from the motion picture based on the novel -Exercises from every chapter on vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and interpretation. -Links to other Web sites.
OUTCOME: The purpose of this project is to organize n a Web page a lot of materials that I am currently using in my class Span 332, conversation and culture. The students are reading a chapter of the book each week and we devote about an hour a week of class time to discussion on the novel. The students find the book very challenging and it would be helpful to have a web page with added materials. I intend to use the resulting product in 2 different ways: as an on class activity, using the facilities in the language lab. We can review some of the material on the big screen and then have the students work in pairs with the exercises on the computers. The other way is as homework assignments. The students will review sections of the Web page on their own and prepare for the class discussions. I am currently working on a Mellon funded project: a guided reading of Spanish poems. I am creating a Web page that includes several elements to help students understand the poems and practice the mechanics of prosody: glossary of words, metrics exercises, quiz on rethorical figures, structure and interpretation. I will be testing this project in April of 2000 in my class Span 340, Introduction to Spanish literature.
TIMELINE: I am currently gathering materials for this project, since I am teaching this book and I can assess the students' needs and figure out the best ways to help them. I will work on the project over the summer and during the academic year 2000-2001, since I will be on leave. The project will be completed by the Spring of 2001. I will test it during the academic year 2001-2002, either in Span 331, Composition and Discussion, or Span 332, Conversation and Culture.
