Description: This request is for additional student assistance to continue the project of putting personal images (scenery, architecture, art) from the various countries we visit and whose languages we study (thus, copyright-free) into a database of digitized images that can be shared and manipulated in various ways (to formulate quick and unique "slide" shows, for example, or for reference by students and professors at the various Consortium schools). We have made a beginning, but are finding that the process is slower than we originally thought (digitizing slides is relatively speedy, scanning and digitizing photos is slower), therefore request additional money for student assistance to scan, digitize, and title the images for the data base. Also, we have found that people are more enthusiastic than we expected about sharing their photographic talents and thus we have offers of images (slides and photos) from many professors and students who have visited various countries in Europe, South America, China, etc. We pick only the best images but still are finding that we have a fine selection to choose from!

Outcome: Please see above and continuing the project using slides and photos from professors and students who have visited various countries in Europe, South America, China, etc. as they are quickly becoming available to us. Thus the desired outcome is a very large data base accessible to all for whatever use students and instructors need.

Timeline: Summer 2000 and perhaps into fall, depending on the availability of student assistence. Project will be use tested by Whitman faculty and students for classwork and reports. Will be available to fellow Consortium users as soon as the Web site is established.
