Title: "Guided Readings of Si me permiten hablar and Tradicion y Cambio

Description: I am applying for a Mellon Summer Stipend to develop a set of guided readings of two books which I currently teach, "Tradicion y Cambio" and "Si me permiten hablar" Tradicion y Cambio is the text I use for my Hispanic Civilization course. "Si me permiten hablar" is used as one of my Hispanic Thought texts; selections of this book are also read in my Hispanic Civilization course. I intend to develop a set of guided readings for both of these texts during the summer of 2000 and the academic year 2000 - 2001. I intend to spend 24 days in Peru and Bolivia during the month of August taking digital pictures of sites which are studied in both of these texts. During the academic year I intend to incorporate these digital images into a set of guided readings to enhance the texts which I currently teach.

Outcome: The purpose of this project is to assemble the necessary digital pictures and then incorporate them into a set of guided readings for two of my classes. The desired outcome of this project is that my students in these courses will have a richer experience of the texts by being able to access the additional material which I intend toprepare to accompany the texts.

Timeline: The summer research will be conducted from August 2 to August23 and will include travel from Quito, Ecuador, where I will be spending the summer, to Cuzco, Peru and La Paz, Bolivia. The travel will include side trips to important archaeological sites of Macchu Pichu in Peru and Tiahuanaco in Bolivia. I will also spend a few days in Cuzco, La Paz, Potosi, Chuquisaca and Santa Cruz. I will test this material in my Hispanic Civilization class during the fall, 2000 semester.
