Title: Enhance existing web page.
Duration: Summer 2000.
Description: With
the help of Natalia Shevchenco, Language Learning Center Director, and student
Victoriya Vdrofyak, I created a basic web page in the summer of 1999 that provides
access to course information for students of first and secon year Sapanish.
For porpose of review, expansion and for conducting a search of sites to support
and enhance my existing web page, I am requesting a Summer Fellowship with stipends
of $3,000 from the Mellon Project.
My goal is to incorporate new technology as part of the language teaching/learning
process in the 2000-2001 school year.
A vast amount of information is currently available on the internet regarding
the acquisition of foreign languages skills. The project that I envision would
take advantage of this resource rather that creating new material.
Outcome: Specifically, this project would include:
a) A search of web sites to enhance, support and supplent material presented in class regarding Spanish grammar such as the difference between ser/estar, por/para, preterit/imperfect and subjunctive as well as Hispanic culture;
b) Creation of a data base of web sites that will supply information and offer opportunities for language use a future date; and
c) A program of study and familiarization with computer technology and skills that will allow me to effectively introduce these topics into the classroom and that will help in the pursuit of future projects such as an authoring system to enable me to create multimedia material in order to provide students with customized computer materials to match content and ability level.
Timeline: Information gleaned off the internet will be a valuable resource for first and second year students and, also, for intructors teaching these levels. These sites also deal with cultural and current events, and, thus, will also be a valuable resource to any Spanish faculty member or other Mellon Consortium participant in the 2000-2001 school year
