Spring 2000 Proposal

Title: Kanji Learning Modules for Japanese

Duration: Summer 20000

Description: In Summer of 1999 we created a series of pages which contain the appropriate Kanji arranged lesson by lesson for the textbook we use. This is fairly important as various Kanji Programs exist out there but their utlility is diminished if they are not CUSTOMIZED to introduce only the Kanji the students are studying in their lessons.
Each lesson/chapter includes approximately 25 characters which then the student can click on to see a Quick Time Movie of someone drawing the character stroke by stroke. You can see the 1999 version for the textbook _Yookoso_ at <http://www.willamette.edu/cla/llc/Japanese/kanji/> Now we want to repeat this process for another textbook, _Nakama_.

Outcome: The purpose is to create lesson by lesson pages of Kanji Learning Modules geared to the new Nakama textbook by Makino and Hatasa, volumes 1 and 2.

Timeline: Project will begin in May or early June. I will provide basic design structure and organization while a student will work with Andy Linn from WITS with a CD-ROM we received from a colleague at Chubu University in Japan. The student must match characters with QT Movies, so we must use a student who can read Japanese well enough to match characters and movies on the CD-ROM.
We anticipate the project to be ready to use by Fall 2000. It will be available for use by all students in 1st and 2nd year Japanese.

Amount: $1,000

Breakdown: 1. $500 Summer Stipend for my design and supervision role.

 2. $500 for approximately 40-50 hours of student work.
