Title: Video shooting of 2 chapters from Taiwan Today

Duration: 2 weeks

Description: Lotus Sun Perry at the University of Puget Sound and I plan to shoot 5 short scenes each from 2 chapters in Taiwan Today, an intermediate textbook co-written by Professor Shouhsin Teng and Lotus. I have designed and written the 10 scenes for this project. Lotus and I will go over the scenes and revise them together in late April. The two chapters are Exercises in the Park and Teahouses in Taiwan. We plan to spend two weeks in Taiwan for this project. I will spend the first week there for preparation and student training. We need two students, one an American student who speaks Chinese and the other a local student who plays the host. Lotus will join me the second week for the shooting. We think one week should be enough for the shooting. I'll take a video camera with me to Taiwan. Gary Esarey will have to give me some training for the use of the video camera. I know very well how to use a manual camera and I believe I can use a video camera without any problem. A close friend of mine owns one of the best teahouses in Taipei; he will let me use his teahouse for the shooting. Lotus and I would like to use these video scenes as supplementary materials for our students. The videoes should enable the students to better understand what they are reading.

Outcome: Purposes and desired outcome of this project have been stated in the project description above.

Timeline: After the video scenes are done, I will bring the video tapes back to Whitman and work on editing them. We should be able to use-test them in the fall.
