name: Francoise Goeury-Richardson
institution: Willamette University
language: French
status: Full-time, tenure track
project title: Provinces de France: La Normandie
duration: June 1998 through January 1999
description: This project is part of an on-going collaboration with Professor
O'Neil of Whitman College. This third of a twelve part series of lessons on
the French provinces will focus on Normandie, a province located in Northwestern
France. Settled by the Vikings in 911, Normandie is a province rich in history.
It is there that General Patton began his great attack across France in 1944.
Centuries earlier, Henry II made public penance in Avranches for the murder
of Thomas Beckett in Canterbury Cathedral. Normandie is also home to William
the Conqueror and Richard the Lionhearted.
The lesson will start with an overview of theprovince followed by sections on
geography, important sites, history, culture, traditions, and literature. I will
share the work with Professor O'Neil on the overview, geography, and important
sites.
outcome: Our goal is to create copyright-free multimedia materials to be
used by third year and advanced students in order to increase their reading
and writing abilities and acquaint them with a very important part of the hexagon.
timeline:
- June: initial reasearch
- July: write the sections on history, culture, traditions, and literature
- August: Assemble the above sections using X-media templates. This will involve
authoring the text on the computer with links to pictures, audio files, quicktime
movies and creating a glossary.
I plan to put the finishing touches in January. This will give Professor O'Neil
a chance to edit my work and add the missing parts. During th fall semester
I will work on my contributions to her lesson on Pays Basque.
The lesson on Normandie will be tested on Willamette students in the fall of
1999.
