Description:

Description of Software

*ImageAXS 4.0 with CD-ROM authoring kit

*ImageAXS is a searchable database for cataloging and archiving images (or audio or video files). It provides configurable data fields, permits viewing in thumbnail or full-screen format. Also, it publishes in HTML and allows users to produce unlimited cross-platform CD-ROM copies of archived images.

Special Funding Request:

Since Whitman College does not have, within the Mellon grant, a category of allotted funds for software expenditures, this proposal is a special request. There was, however, money remaining in the Whitman account after this year’s on-campus workshop. I propose that a portion of the remaining money be used to purchase this software package.

Outcome:

The immediate goal is to provide Celia Weller (Professor of Spanish, Whitman College) to begin, with the help of a student technical assistant, digitizing and cataloging slides and photos. The copyright-free images will come from the collections of Celia Weller and Mary Anne O’Neil (Professor of French). The catalogue will be made available for free use of Consortium members via the Internet or CD-ROM copies.

The long-term outcome is to expand the collection by cataloging images donated by other faculty, students and institutions.

Timeline:

The software is to be purchased in Spring, 1999. Training of one or more student technical assistants will begin at the same time.

Digitizing and cataloging the initial collection will be done over the summer of 1999.

The initial collection will be used by Celia Weller and Mary Anne O'Neil during the Fall Semester, 1999. It will also be made available to all members of NWLC at that time.
