Title: Whitman Image Project
Duration: Summer, 1999.
Description: This initial request represents the first step in a larger/continuing project of putting personal images (scenery, arquitecture, art) from the various countries we visit and whose languages we study (thus, copyright-free) into an Images data base for access by the students and faculty of the Consortium schools. outcome: Our immediate project is to begin a data base of digitized images that can be shared and manipulated in various ways (to formulate quick and unique "slide" shows, for example, or for reference by students and professors at the various Consortium schools). Eventually, after we (my student assistant/s and I) get the data base established using Images software with materials from language professors at Whitman, we will then begin to ask Whitman students and profesesors who have gone on trips abroad to lend us their slides and photos (or digitized images) to enter into the data base. The data base will also provide titles and credits. The next step will be to include students and profesesors at the other Consortium schools in our request that they lend/send us images for inclusion in the project. The last two steps (those of including data from students at Whitman and from students and faculty at the other Consortium schools) would be the basis for further requests for Mellon funds for student assistance.
Timeline: Summer, 1999: begining of project by digitizing slides and photographs that Whitman faculty (in all languages) have on hand and wish to add to the data base. Fall, 1999: use-test by language students and professors at Whitman.
