Whitman's Technology Services is under new management. As with any organization, the new management brings with it improvements and strengths that build on the accomplishments of the previous management... and the previous management left technology in tip-top shape. Whitman has one of the best network infrastructures among America's liberal arts colleges.

Here are some of the goals set forth by the new management:

Keep Users Informed

We hope to do this through the newsletter as a starter. The newsletter is available both on paper and on-line for the first issue, but will migrate more toward the on-line version. That means you can always access it via the web. The purpose of the newsletter is to keep you informed on the ever-changing landscape of technology - and technology is changing faster than ever before!
Improve the Support Structure
There are two ways in which this is planned. One is the establishment of the Help Desk. You can read about this elsewhere in this newsletter. The second is through reorganization of the service structure within Technology Services. We plan to eliminate existing boundaries for services - that is, we hope to make user services the core through all our existing departments.
Empower the User
We want to transfer much of the responsibility of using technology to users. With the advancement of technology, some of the tasks previously performed only by "trained professionals" can be done by end users. This has already been evidenced in such areas as desktop publishing, web page development, graphics production and so on. In addition, file management, backup and certain software installations are becoming easier for anybody to do. We will do this in two ways: offering more training and providing easily accessible equipment.
Set Limits
The end user expectation for technology support is ever increasing. We cannot be everything for everybody given the small staff size. Rather than offering mediocre service in everything, we want to give the best service in the areas people need the most.
Maintain and Improve the Network Structure
As traffic on the campus network and the Internet increases, we will modify and upgrade equipment to meet the demand.
