YOUR MARCUS ACCOUNT

You have set up your all-important Marcus account... so what can you do with it? There are two things in particular that users want to do with their Marcus accounts – send/receive email and create their own personal home pages. Here we will give you a brief overview of these services. For further information, please go to http://wcts.whitman.edu/

There are several different ways to check your email: On your own computer, using an email client of your choice (like Outlook or Eudora); On any computer, using Whitman’s “WebMail” website (http://webmail.whitman.edu); or using a program called Pine, directly on Marcus. Pine is very popular for its simplicity and speed.

Using another email client

Because email clients can vary so greatly, we will not go into the nitty-gritty of setting up an account in your program. In your client (like Microsoft Outlook), you will need to set up a new account using the following information:

Connection type: imap
Incoming mail server:
imap.whitman.edu
Outgoing mail server: mail.whitman.edu
News server:
news.whitman.edu

Using the World Wide Web

Your email can be accessed from almosts any World Wide Web browser at http://webmail.whitman.edu. Follow the online instructions and be sure to logout and close your browser when you are done.

Using Pine

Pine is a nifty little program on Marcus that lets you send and receive email, store email in various folders, handle attachments, and set up complicated address books. However, the best thing about Pine is that it is the ideal way to check your email between classes or whenever.

To get into Pine, you must use a Telnet client such as BetterTelnet or Tera Term. When you run your telnet program, you need to connect to marcus.whitman.edu. Once connected, you will be prompted for your username and password (you received these when you activated your Marcus account initially). Be careful of upper and lower case! They mean different things to the computer...

If you have logged in successfully, you should see a marcus% prompt - this means it is waiting for your command. To get to your mail, just type ‘mail’ and hit Return. This will take you to the main Pine menu. Here are just a few of the commands:

From the Main Menu
i - index of messages
a - address book
q - quit
Anytime
m - main menu
c - compose a new message
q - quit
While reading an email
r - reply to message
f - forward the message
s - save message to folder
d - delete message
i - back to index
From the Message Index
up and down - move the highlight
return - read the message
r - reply to message
f - forward the message
While Composing an email
ctrl-x - send the message
ctrl-c - cancel
ctrl-o - save a draft
ctrl-t - spell-check

Creating homepages

Homepages are a great way to express yourself and communicate with the world at large. They are also relatively simple to create! One of the first things you will need to do is set up your account so that you can create your own homepages. The easiest way to do this is to run the webwizard:

1) Telnet into Marcus and login.
2) At the marcus% prompt, type ‘webwizard’ and hit Enter

Your web space will be available within 24 hours through http://people.whitman.edu or by typing http://people.whitman.edu/~ and your network user name. Your personal web page will give you further instructions on building your own homepage!
