WHITMAN TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES

There are a large number of technology resources and facilities on campus that you will use throughout your time here. Occasionally we update lab hours to meet student needs, and we are always expanding the capabilities of our labs. For up-to-date information, check out the Technology Resources in the WCTS web pages.

Computer Labs

Olin Lab, 165 Olin Hall
A blend of Windows 2000 and iMac computers, with color scanning, printing, and color laser printing available. Additional software includes: Minitab and On Common Ground.

Maxey Lab, 107 Maxey Hall
30 workstations, PCs and iMac computers, with scanning, printing, and color inkjet printing. The lab is open 24 hours a day while classes are in session, but closed while classes are held in the lab. Additional software in this lab includes: SPSS, Sniffy the Virtual Rat, and eViews.

Penrose Library
Throughout the library, there are carrels with PCs and Macintosh computers. Laptops are also available for checkout to be used use in the library. Extra software includes: On Common Ground (this does not include the many additional resources available online or from dedicated resource workstations).

Multimedia Development Lab, Hunter 404 (The “MDL”)
This lab has two PCs and 7 high-end Macs for non-linear video editing and extreme graphics work. Other equipment includes scanners, film printers (which make 35mm slides from computer graphics), a large format printer, and linear video editing equipment. Available software includes: Photoshop, Pagemaker, Flash, and Final Cut Pro.

WCTS offers a number of workshops on using the multimedia equipment and software. Please check our web page or contact the multimedia lab at x4761 for more information.

Special Use Labs
Some labs are maintained for specialized use: The Language Learning Center on the third floor of Olin Hall (room 316), Olin Hall (Math) and the Hall of Science (Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics). In most cases a professor will direct you to use one of these labs. For other uses, be sure to check with the department first.

Printing

Black and white laser printing is available in all labs on campus free of charge. We are able to do this only if students print a single copy of their documents. There are a number of copy machines in the library for those students who need multiple copies of their printout.

Whether you are using a PC or a Mac, several network printers are available for you. Always make sure you know where the print job is going before sending it – if someone has reset the destination, your paper could show up in another building on campus!

As you print on a networked printer, remember: print jobs have to travel over the network. Be patient. If your document still hasn’t printed five minutes after you sent the command, ask a lab assistant for help. Sending a second print request will make things worse. And again, don’t print multiple copies – use a copier instead, that’s what they are for.

A color laser printer is available in Olin for $1.00 a page, a large-format inkjet printer (13” X 21” max) is available in Maxey Lab for 25-50 cents a page, and a large-format color plotter is available in Hunter 404 (inquire at the Multimedia Development Lab about use and price for the color plotter).

Wireless Networks

New this year! Wireless network connections in the Library, the Language Learning Center, the Olin Hall second floor student lounge, and the Reid Campus Center are based on the standard wireless protocol, IEEE 802.11b, and will work with any PC using this type of standard wireless card, or any Macintosh using an Apple Airport Card.

IMS

Instructional Multimedia Services in Hunter 202 is your one-stop-shop for all your multimedia gear needs. With your handy ID card, you can check out equipment like digital camcorders, digital still cameras, VCRs, projectors, and computers for presentations. Reserving stuff in advance is always a good idea!
