| Your Marcus Account You have set up your all-important Marcus account... so what can you do with it? There are two things in particular that users want to do with their Marcus accounts send/receive email and create their own personal home pages. There are several different ways to check your email: On your own computer, using an email client of your choice (like Outlook or Eudora); On any computer, using Whitman's "WebMail" website (http://webmail.whitman.edu); or using a program called Pine, directly on Marcus. Pine is very popular for its simplicity and speed. Using another email client Because email clients can vary so greatly, we will not go into the nitty-gritty of setting up an account in your program. In your client (like Microsoft Outlook), you will need to set up a new account using the following information:
Using Pine Pine is a nifty little program on Marcus that lets you send and receive email, store email in various folders, handle attachments, and set up complicated address books. However, the best thing about Pine is its speed, it is fast enough to make it the ideal way to check your email between classes or whenever. To get into Pine, you must use a Telnet client such as BetterTelnet or Tera Term. When you run your telnet program, you need to connect to marcus.whitman.edu. Once connected, you will be prompted for your username and password (you received these when you activated your Marcus account initially). Be careful of upper and lowercase characters in your password! If you have logged in successfully, you should see a marcus% prompt - this means it is waiting for your command. To get to your mail, just type 'mail' and hit Return. This will take you to the main Pine menu. Here are just a few of the commands:
