Welcome to Whitman, and welcome to whit.bits! For new students, this edition of the Technology Services newsletter serves as a guidebook for the technology resources on campus. For returning students, much of this stuff will seem familiar, but a few things have changed. Anyway, hope you had a great summer, and we look forward to seeing you around this year!

Over the summer, WCTS User Services has been working to make all desktop PC's on campus Year 2000 compliant. To do this, over 80 PC's were replaced in academic and administrative areas. Machines that did not have hardware issues have had or will have their software updated or patched to bring them up to Y2K compliancy. While Macintosh hardware doesn't have Year 2000 problems, Technology Services has replaced over 40 older Macs on campus with brand new iMacs.

As of August 1, the help desk phone number has been changed from 4799 to 4976. To call the help desk from off campus, dial 527-4976. This change was made because the previous help desk number used the 526 prefix, while the 527 prefix is more common to campus phone numbers.

The WCTS User Services staff grew by one this past June. Cheyenne Wissenbach, class of '99, is the newest addition and will help us to better support the campus computing needs.

There's also been work maintaining the mail and web servers, continuing work on wiring buildings on the edges of the main campus, updating web pages, and continuing training for the administrative staff involved with the conversion to the new integrated administrative information system.
