Whit.bits - The Whitman College Technology Services Newsletter
Opening Week 2003 Edition

There are a large number of technology resources and facilities on campus that you will use throughout your time here. Occasionally we update lab hours to meet student needs, and we are always expanding the capabilities of our labs. For up-to-date information, check out the Technology Resources in the WCTS web pages.

Unless otherwise noted, lab computers are equipped with zip drives and recordable CD drives. A few in each location have floppy drives, but students are discouraged against using floppies because they are extremely vulnerable to failure and data loss.

Olin Lab, 165 Olin Hall
Windows XP and iMac computers, and a multimedia workstation. Color scanning, B&W and color printing available. Graphics, web authoring, and scanning software on the multimedia workstation.

Maxey Lab, 107 Maxey Hall
Windows XP PCs, iMac computers, and a multimedia workstation. Scanning, printing, and color inkjet printing is available. The lab is open 24 hours a day during the term, but closed while classes are held in the lab.

Penrose Library
Throughout the library you will find carrels with Windows XP PCs and Macintosh computers. Laptops are also available for short-term checkout to be used within the library. Also available in the library are two workstations with assistive software including a text scanner, screen readers, and screen enlargers. Check with the Academic Resource office for more information about assistive technology resources. There are many additional resources available online or from dedicated resource workstations.

Science Lab
This facility houses 12 Windows XP PC's and 6 Macintoshes, including PC and Mac multimedia workstations. Scanning and printing are available. A small number of checkout laptops are available for short term use within the building. Additional software will include many specialized software packages used by various science departments.

Multimedia Development Lab, Hunter 404 (The "MDL")
This lab has two high-end PCs and 6 high-end Macs for digital video editing and extreme graphics work. Other equipment includes scanners, film printers (make 35mm slides from computer graphics), a large format plotter, large format color laser printer, and linear video editing equipment. Available software includes: Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and Final Cut Pro.

Instructional Multimedia Services in Hunter 202 offers a variety of multimedia gear available for checkout with a valid Whitman ID. You can check out equipment like digital camcorders, digital still cameras, VCRs, projectors, and computers for presentations. Advance reservations are important! For more information, stop by or give IMS a call at x5257.

Black and white laser printing is available in all labs on campus free of charge. We are able to do this only if students print a single copy of their documents. There are a number of copy machines in the library for those students who need multiple copies of their printout.

Whether you are using a PC or a Mac, several network printers are available for you. Always make sure you know where the print job is going before sending it - if someone has reset the destination, your paper could show up in another building on campus!

As you print on a networked printer, remember: print jobs have to travel over the network. Be patient. If your document still hasn't printed five minutes after you sent the command, ask a lab assistant for help. Sending a second print request will make things worse. And again, don't print multiple copies - use a copier instead, that's what they are for.

Networked color inkjets printers are available in most labs. A color laser printer is available in the MDL, as is a xlarge-format color plotter (inquire at the particular lab about use and prices for color printing).

There are only a few rules in the computer labs, and these rules are designed to help you to get your work done efficiently and peacefully.

  • NO food, beverages, or tobacco in the labs. You can leave these items at the door or in the Consultant office.
  • The labs are only for use by members of the Whitman Community.
  • Equipment and facilities are for legitimate academic use only.
  • Equipment is first come, first served, and cannot be reserved by students without recommendation of a professor and permission from WCTS .
  • If you leave a computer unattended for more than 20 minutes, you forfeit its use.
  • Do not reconfigure the machines (including external connections) or alter other people's files without permission.
  • Do not disturb other users with excessive noise.
  • Save your work on your Acad-server folder or on a Zip disk or CD. The hard drives are frequently cleaned.
  • Do not print multiple copies. Copy machines are available in Penrose Memorial Library for student use.
  • The computer labs are occasionally reserved for instructional purposes. Such arrangements will be posted in advance on the door of the lab. You must leave before a scheduled class or workshop begins, unless the instructor gives you permission to stay.
