Your Student E-mail Account
There are several different ways to check your E-mail: On your own computer, using an E-mail client of your choice (like Outlook or Eudora); On any computer, using Whitman’s Webmail website (http://webmail.whitman.edu); or using a program called Pine, directly on Students. Pine is very popular for its simplicity and speed.
Using Webmail over the World Wide Web

Your E-mail can be accessed from almost any World Wide Web browser at http://webmail.whitman.edu. Follow the online instructions and be sure to logout and close your browser when you are done. Whitman’s Webmail server also allows you to perform maintenance on your E-mail folders so you can keep your account clean.
Using Another E-mail Client
Because E-mail clients can vary so greatly, we will not go into the nitty-gritty of setting up an account in your program. In your client (like Microsoft Outlook), you will need to set up a new account using the following information:
Connection type:
IMAP
Incoming mail server:
imapstu.whitman.edu
Outgoing mail server*:
mail.whitman.edu
*Please note if you are using an ISP you will want to refer to their documentation for the outgoing mail server.
Using PINE
Pine is a nifty little program on Students that lets you send and receive E-mail, store E-mail in various folders, handle attachments, and set up complicated address books. However, the best thing about Pine is its speed, it is fast enough to make it the ideal way to check your E-mail between classes or whenever you are on the go.
To get into Pine, you must use a TelnetSSH client. Here is a list of popular clients:
Windows:
PuTTY or Tera Term
Macintosh (Pre-OS X):
Nifty TelnetSSH
Macintosh (OS X):
WCTS-SSH (on lab Macs) or OS X Terminal
When you run your telnetSSH program, you need to connect to students.whitman.edu. Once connected, you will be prompted for your username and password (you received these when you activated your Students account initially). Be careful of upper and lower-case characters in your password!
If you have logged in successfully, you should see a students% prompt - this means it is waiting for your command. To get to your mail, just type mail and hit Return. This will take you to the main Pine menu.
