As
always, summer is a busy time for WCTS, when we work with many
departments
and offices to implement their changes and improvements. Here are just
a few things to watch for during the summer, and to be ready for when you return this Fall:
- Students - there will be very short period during the summer
when email will be down (less than a day), but we will send you information in advance
about when that will be.
We will be working on installing a new server called "Alice," which will become
the new home of all student web pages and email accounts. So by Fall, you'll be connecting
to alice.whitman.edu, not marcus.whitman.edu. Marcus will still be around, but will
be used for faculty and staff email and web pages.
Dividing the load between two servers will ensure better email performance for everybody,
and give Whitman a valuable back-up resource in case one server ever fails. Watch for
more information about how to access your email and webpages on ALICE.
On returning from summer break, the fall registration will rely heavily on the web to help you confirm your class schedule.
You will be asked to complete your express registration over the web and verify your addresses before classes start.
New students will be able to register for classes from their advisors office on the first day of the new school year.
Look for details in the information sent you by the Registrar this summer.
- Faculty - The Registrar's office is conducting a pilot project, during which a number of professors
will be submitting their grades online. More information forthcoming on how that all goes.
WCTS has quite a collection of projects scheduled this summer,
all intended to update and improve services and resources. We should have lots of good things to tell you about by Fall!
