The campus telephone, voice mail and wireless network will be down on Tuesday, January 13th between 5:00 and 7:00 PM. This critical move, originally scheduled to be performed in late December, was unavoidably delayed due to the extreme weather conditions in Walla Walla over the holidays. We apologize for the inconvnience. However, it must be done before the semester starts.

WHAT THIS MEANS AND WHO IS AFFECTED:

Telephone and voice mail systems:

You will not be able to place or receive calls or access the voice mail system while the servers are down. Someone calling in from outside the campus will not be able to leave a voice mail message while the voice mail server is down.

Wireless Networking:

The wireless network will not allow access to the local campus network or to the Internet while the wireless security gateway is down.

The entire Whitman network will be down from 5:00 - 11:00 pm Wednesday, January 14th, to move the primary storage area network (SAN) from the Olin Hall Computer Center to the new North Hall Server Room.

WHAT THIS MEANS AND WHO IS AFFECTED:

Access to all Whitman servers and all network services will be down for six hours starting at 5:00 pm on Wednesday. You will not be able to access your email, files stored on the network or access local Whitman web pages, including the main Whitman home page, and WebAdvisor.

You should not be working on any documents or files stored on the network as you may lose changes or damage the documents that you have open. Make sure you close your files before 5:00 pm on Wednesday. You may need to shutdown and restart your computer sometime after 11:00 pm to re-establish your connection to the network.

CLEo, WinApp and most Web Services will be down from 5:00 - 9:00 pm Thursday, January 8th, for routine maintenance.

WHAT THIS MEANS AND WHO IS AFFECTED:

All CLEo sites and mailing lists will be unavailable during the downtime. Any messages sent to CLEo lists will be queued for later delivery.

Windows Application Server (winapp):

This affects all students, faculty, and staff using software that is based on the network (such as SPSS, Minitab, Eviews, Maple and PinPoint). You should not be running any applications which reside on winapp. Make sure you close your files and applications before 5:00 PM on Thursday. You may need to shutdown and restart your computer Friday morning in order to re-establish your connection to the server.

Web Services:

Most services accessed via the web will be unavailable during the downtime. This includes the main Whitman webpage, Quack, Webadvisor, CLEo, the Service Request/Inventory system, the Whitman directory, and People Search.

netFiles and Webmail will remain available during this downtime.
